Interview: Herrie Son

I've known Herrie Son a mere 27 months, but it feels like we've always been friends. We met at the beginning of 11th grade, in photo class, and immediately hit it off. She's marked with an unmistakable air of optimism, energy, and brash honesty. Not to mention horniness. She's got a unique, eclectic taste in music and film, and loves male models.

Her favorite magazine is VMan, because it's adorned with pretty boys in high fashion and ambiguously homoerotic poses. Unlike some of her prudish peers, Herrie is a girl who wholeheartedly loves man-on-man action. We watched Fassbinder's Querelle last night, and she took it to task for not having enough graphic sex.

Aside from male models, Herrie's into journalism, writing for the school newspaper in High School and now majoring in the subject at NYU. Starting next semester, she'll be double-majoring in Cinema Studies and taking classes at the Tisch film school. She's also a hard-core rugby player/enthusiast, and a brilliant photographer. She takes sweet polaroids-- one of her dreams is to be a men's fashion photographer and then seduce all of her doe-eyed models. She's a fiction writer and a linguist, wielding supreme skills in Korean, Spanish and Italian. On top of all this, Herrie's genuinely interested in volunteer work, having spent a summer in Paraguay building latrines and schools for needy villagers (in Amigos, a non-religious volunteer program). She's considering entering the Peace Corps after college.

Alright, that's a pretty impressive resume, but it doesn't really capture the essence of Herrie Son. So I made a stab at doing so by interviewing her yesterday. It's pretty self-centered to write about yourself all the time, so I figured I should start writing about more interesting people.
Herrie's favorite movies include Pedro Almodovar's Talk To Her ("Because female bullfighters are really cool, and people should fall in love with coma patients more often"), Survive Style 5+, Rushmore ("It's a cool stalker story. When I like someone, I want to know everything about them"), Chungking Express (because Cantonese is rad, and she likes it when Takashi Kaneshiro overdoses on pineapples), and The Graduate ("Dustin Hoffman looks cool in a scuba suit").

Herrie's number one goal in life is to fall in love. Ideally, love for her would spring from being stuck in a weird or awkward situation together, like being trapped in an elevator. "Or something normal, like just being in the same class or going to the same movie-- and we'd meet and find out we're the exact same person."

Herrie also wants to go the Amazon rainforest before she dies. "During the winter," she tells me, "There are monsoons and the whole rainforest floods. Everything is underwater, and it's like a whole different world. You can swim under the surface and see a fish float past a tree trunk." Antarctica is another important place for Herrie: "Teams of scientists go down there to test ice core samples and find out about the history of Earth's atmosphere. I want to go and help them do that." Finally, Herrie wants to write a genuinely good short story before she dies. Her favorite short story is Haruki Murakami's "On Seeing The 100% Perfect Girl One Beautiful April Morning".
"I love the idea of finding something that's 100% perfect. That's something rare, it almost never happens... and when it does happen, it just drowns you... it's like being under water."

"Who are three men you'd love to fuck?" I ask. She immediately responds, wide-eyed, "Jake Gyllenhaal. He's like a big bear that's really smart, and nice, and cooks well. And having sex with him would be like making love... literally. He would do it right." Secondly, Herrie would love to fuck Japanese heartthrob Tadanobu Asano. "He's the Japanese Johnny Depp, and he's so sexy." Her favorite Tadanobu Asano film role is his portrayal of the (first) title character in Shark-Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl.

"He's the first asian man I ever fell in love with." Finally, Herrie would fuck Josh Ketchum, older brother of local legend James Ketchum. "He's a renaissance man with a lot of talents, and one of Davis' all time hottest men."

We took pictures in Wellman after the interview, and Herrie sported a rad dress that she'd bought in New York. "I wore this when I went clubbing at Misshapes. When you go, you should wear something light and skanky... it got really hot with this thing on."
Modification to a pre-existing chalkboard drawing, by Herrie Son:

If Herrie had one wish, and it couldn't be a request for an infinite number of wishes, she would wish to die happy. "Probably living with Jake Gyllenhaal, in a little house with a little fireplace."
